Alexandre Antonelli

Director of Science, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew

Alexandre Antonelli is Director of Science at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the UK. He is also Professor in Biodiversity and Systematics at the University of Gothenburg, Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford and a distinguished Scientist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.     

     

Alex is a Brazilian biodiversity scientist, studying the diversity, distribution, evolution and conservation of species and developing methods to speed up scientific discovery and find nature-positive solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises. He is a member of the CBD Informal Advisory Group on Technical and Scientific Cooperation and the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits – work he recently presented at the G20 Bioeconomy Initiative meeting in Brazil.  

     

He has published over 245 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and has been named on Clarivate’s ‘Highly Cited Researchers’ list every year since 2020. In 2022, he was awarded the prestigious Senckenberg Prize for Nature Research.
